This enjoyable 105-minute DVD - George Marriner Maull and The Discovery Orchestra present Discover Beethoven’s 5th© - includes a one-hour exploration of the first movement, video-taped live for public television at our April 29, 2010, Discovery Concert at NJPAC, as well as TDO’s performance of the other three movements and a listening guide for the entire symphony.    

Following the initial performance of the first movement, there follows a series of stimulating interactions between Maestro Maull and the audience as this music is investigated.  Audience members are cajoled to respond to questions that can only be answered by carefully listening to the musical excerpt that follows. 

Another unique feature of George Marriner Maull/TDO Discovery Concerts involves the use of a printed Listening Guide, included with this DVD.  This simplified “picturization” of the score, with numbered musical events such as a crescendo or sequence, is referenced throughout the discovery process.  It also provides each audience member with a tool with which to visually follow and stay centered in the music. After the exploration, the entire first movement of Symphony No. 5 is played straight through again.

A “second performance” of any of the featured music is a rare occurrence at a classical music concert, but is routine at George Marriner Maull/TDO Discovery Concerts. This second time through provides an opportunity for the live and virtual audience - having just become more aware of the musical detail - to engage in a very focused listening experience.  Audiences always rave that the “second performance” sounds so incredibly different and revelatory. 

The Discovery Concert format has been thoroughly enjoyed by audiences spanning children as young as eight to adults in their eighties.  They have become a favorite destination for listeners ranging from those for whom classical music listening is a new experience as well as for those with considerable listening sophistication. Discovery Concerts bring both entertaining and substantive teaching into the concert hall.
